illustration for chapter 3:
"As the light was blocked by one of the whales approaching, I found myself in an anxiety which made it hard to breath.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“This is a levian wraith,” she explained. “It’s what is going to get rid of the creature inside of you.”
Though I had chills down my spine, I trusted Lily. As the Levian wraith (as she called it) swerved around us, Lily lifted my hand and held up my wrist. She didn’t take her eyes off of me as I slowly lost discomfort. The levian wraith got within feet of us and opened its enormous jaws. It’s baleen looked soft, like horse hair.
“Just let it do its job, and we can be on our way,” Lily consoled further.
I took a deep breath as the wraith’s baleen brushed my wrist. The fibers pierced my skin, but did not sting. I felt a cooling sensation as they entered. Soon, the fibers began to slowly pull out reddish-black threads. More and more baleen entered and pulled more of the strange fibers out. They began to squeal as they collected, then vanished into the top of the jaw. Soon, the weight I had felt was lifted, and I truly felt myself again.
Before I knew it, the wraith’s snout pulled away from me, leaving a brown scar where the dark mark used to lie. As I watched the levian wraith slowly drift away into the vibrant sunset, I felt a serenity I had always wished would return.
“See?” Lily smiled.
“Thank you,” I said full of happiness.
Lily took the mirror out again. My hair was still long, but shorter. I looked into my eyes to see a familiar charisma I had missed. It was just a hint of it, but it seemed to return. Troubling me however, was my dilated pupils and iris, lined with bright red and black veins."
