Curator’s Comments:
While other figure drawings in your portfolio are generally more expressive or dramatically constructed, I appreciate the economic androgyny of What Makes a Woman. The lost and found calligraphic quality of the broken black line provides a striking contour. The placement within the center of the page accentuates the long verticality and plainness of the form. I’m not sure if it’s a ghost on my monitor or in your drawing, but I see the ever so faint afterimage of what appears to be another figure drawing on the paper. The last image you’ve posted, Audacious, is very aptly titled. A bold image, there’s a nervy, contumelious assertion of the mature woman’s proportions and posture. I’m intrigued by the unlikely subject, which I feel stands a fine line between defiance and sarcasm. The model commands the cosmic space, offering cake while simultaneously gesturing a blessing or universal composure. I’m uncertain as to the specific iconography of the image, but the cake could imply sweet divine reward as certainly as lewd abundance. I’m attracted to your first piece for its formal simplicity, but your last piece generates most spirited content.
