Curator’s Comments:
How do Acorns Fall is a sensitive collage, containing a fine balance of analogous and disparate elements. I appreciate the way the strong diagonal of the pencil rendering interrupts other vertical and horizontal elements in the piece. There isn’t any real attempt to conceal the edges where one paper or found element meets another, but careful consideration appears to have been given to their repeated shape and textures. The torn notebook paper for instance along the left margin is irregular enough to echo the grouping of leaves growing out from the central stem. The brown buttons also suggest the button capped tops of the acorns elsewhere in the piece. For me, on my computer screen, only part of the hand written text is legible. While it may offer another layer of poetic inspiration, I’m happy it doesn’t overpower the delicate visual expression. Keeping the range of warm hues within a fairly narrow palette further assists in harmonizing the space. While narrative content may not have been a consideration, the piece highlights the delicacy of natural forms, and their ultimate passing.
