I really like your piece, my eye is drawn into the scene, the viewer discovers the scene and depending on the viewer's sex, and state of mind, the interpretation of the scene has a varied meaning?
Curator’s Comments:
Liz by Daylight is a stunning watercolor; creating a strongly illusionistic environment, with a surprisingly concealed figure within. Attention to sunlit surfaces provides rich texture and glowing warm hues throughout the painting. The viewer is offered an interrupted voyeuristic scene, with visual clues repeated that present an obstructed view of the subject. The sunlight peaking under the slats of the surrounding fence echoes our limited field of vision, and the position of the chair effectively screens the identifying features of the subject. Her provocatively striped legs languidly draped over the chair are almost a tease in the sense we are catching her in casual, if not self-conscious repose. I also appreciate the off-center placement of the chair, placing compositional emphasis on the shadow it casts. One might argue the sun light is the true subject of the piece- and not Liz.
