Curator’s Comments:
Long Road Ahead is a timeless photograph that arouses a myriad of emotions. For me, the work’s title sets up the great expanse of what seem to be quickly moving clouds against an expansive sky, offering a sense of hope within a collective weariness. The isolated farmhouse could also evoke nostalgia for rural life. The cloud formations appear to support the illusion the silo is the origin of the natural light; as the angle of the lens draws the clouds and contrast to its focal point. While a road leading the viewer into the picture plane through linear perspective often functions as a visually welcoming device, the placement of the roadway to the extreme left of the composition deliberately passes by the subject. It’s placement formally counterbalances the grouping of black trees and white architecture, and perhaps intends for the viewer to consider the reality that we often overlook magical elements on our road through the mundane.
