Curator’s Comment:

What a charming piece- it’s whimsical and buoyant with an unexpected, precarious balance of visual weight.  The yellow tonal shift in the background helps the elements float in the composition. The subject has a distinctly Asian influence, but I’m still detecting a Western sensibility of light and atmospheric perspective.  The lotus flower is the icing on top of the meticulously detailed patterns, with the articulated striped shoots as supporting stems.  The open blossom itself suggests a fallen white bird- tails and wings curled skyward.  Or am I just carrying this over form your other works?  The elongated format further supports the visual drop of the figures- the red thread tenuously fasts our eyes on their fall.

This is Mine has a similar proportion and handling of figure and ground, and here the nets provide the mechanisms of imagined rift.  I feel these two pieces both strike a fine balance of tumult versus hushed stillness, and appropriation of Non-western motifs.
