So appreciative of your description of this painting Kristin, which is pretty spot on.  You are correct in seeing them as individual yet together, where they are successful paintings on their own but as they work together make a much grander statement.  This painting is meant as a reflection as how I see my marriage.

Curator’s Comment:

I was delighted to find this new abstraction on the site today, and appreciate its vibrant color.  The diptych format works well with the title Separate Together, and concept of duality or playful contradiction in pairing.  The figurative forms exist as echoes of each other in both tone and color, without directly achieving bilateral symmetry.  I find it intriguing that the shapes are generally solid and flat, and yet have suggestions of cast shadows. My eye follows the edge of the linear contours, and yet they don’t perform delineation of edge or boundary as much as coincide with the painterly gesture.  The media isn’t indicated, but I wonder if a move away from clay-based pigments and gouache influenced the more saturated color palette. While having previously admired the Pompeii series, this work appears more self-contained or referential; they are two wholes (divided) rather than fragments of something larger.
