Curator’s Comments:
This piece Ich bin Berliner came up randomly on the site today, and it made me recall admiring your fashion inspired portraits a couple of years ago. This piece is even more textile oriented, and the figure almost dissolves into the dynamic pattern, as there is no negative space. I also appreciate the choice to treat the figure to a more muted, and almost achromatic palette, while swirling reds and blue configurations surround her. The cap and tie confer an androgynous gender in what could otherwise and more predictability be a feminine motif. The square presentation of the picture plane further heightens the visual tension between figure and ground, as neither “landscape” nor “portrait” immediately emerge from the picture plane. I do hope you’ve continued with this approach, and hope to see more of your work on the site.
