Curator’s Comment:
Manyon appears to be tightly connected to the other quasi-narrative works in your portfolio, but has a slightly more elevated mood. I enjoy the gnarled contouring of the roots/twisting vines that compose the bodies of the figures. They maintain an organic connectivity, but also suggest deterioration or past trauma. I also detect a subtle humor in this work with the inclusion of the (planed/manufactured) wood plank floor, as it visually and conceptually contrasts the natural materials in the contemplative figure. But the local color in the background is a luxuriant and soft blue and mossy green. Devoid of trees or mature growth, it doesn’t imply deforestation in its emptiness. That the standing figure is in the shadows, gazing into the light, could imply a wishful anticipation or optimism. But his facial expression is ambiguous; neither cheerful nor particularly distressed. Perhaps longing. The piece entitled Word to the Wise also interests me, and holds my attention. Likewise this piece exhibits a dexterous handling of the acrylic medium, and a formal variation in textural surfaces that is very appealing. But these two figures are engaged in a strange exchange. The ambivalent character on the right seems to be offering his smiling companion a large wooden stump to supplement his armless torso. I don’t know what this offering implies- a moral lesson, or simply an ironic business dealing. The old adage comes to mind that in the world of the blind, the one eyed man is king.
