Really reminds me of long ago of a rainy day working at the fruit stand and the umbrellas my dad would set up on the back of the IH truck.
Those umbrellas were usually to shade the fruit.
Curator’s Comments:
This densely colored market scene is an interesting departure from your light and airy related works of produce and flowers. While the abstracted baskets of fruit remain saturated and warm in tone, the much darker washes of black and blue are unexpected in the background. I see the small figures as moving freely and ghostlike through the scene, just as the umbrellas actually ground the market stands in the space. I also like that the umbrella tops form half circles that nicely echo the shapes below. I’m wondering if this painting is actually a plein air piece in a specific place and time, or as the loose handling of the water media suggests, the memory of one.
