Curator’s Comments:

This bold self-portrait identified as having been created from an acrylic transfer a while back holds a graphic attraction.  The photographic base looks heavily worked over with layers of collage and semi-transparent color wash.  It came up in a random selection on the site recently, and I was happy to revisit the image.  I find it interesting that while the head is the central focal element, the body juts out diagonally, creating dynamic tension.  It appears there are paper or board seams that further break up the composition into rectilinear segments. Both the implied lines and physical seams serve to frame the self-portrait and lead movement into the surrounding space. The juxtaposed sections of red-violet and gold strike me as a method of abstract color blocking within a representational image, resulting in a piece that is as much about form as it is about subject. I appreciate your varied approaches to manipulating photographs, and would like to see which direction your practice has led to date.  Please consider sharing new works.

This is amazing! The colors are wonderful and the design is very strong. Is this an oil painting or maybe acrylic?
