Curator’s Comments:
Marsh Sunrise appears to be a small gem of a landscape, even though the physical dimensions aren’t actually noted. What looks to be a heavily deckled edge of the paper support adds a textural and framing component to the grassy space. I appreciate the thickly applied blue-green pigment in the foreground with added bits of broken color. The taller plant stalks reach beyond this dark spatial barrier in the composition, and point to rolling clouds constructed out of impasto puffs of white, blue and pink. The elongated rectangular picture plane would offer a restful air if it weren’t for the visual activity of the painterly marks. Several other landscapes posted in the same year offer a similar restrained intensity through directional brushwork. These works provide a rousing foil to the sensitive mixed media collages in your oeuvre.
