Curator’s Comment:
The Dorchester is a disturbingly multifaceted double portrait, capturing the caricature of questionable societal attributes. It’s like John Currin on steroids. From a formal standpoint, the piece is beautifully modeled, but has a strange perspective as the background male figure meets the viewer’s gaze and advances past the larger androgynously female in the foreground. The warm shared homogenous color palette also causes the female’s protruding chin to collide in space with the male’s face. The sweep of auburn hair diametrically opposes, but ultimately unites the two figures. If eyes are truly windows into the souls, we’re viewing disconcerting psychological absence.
