Curator’s Comments:
This modestly sized painting Matin d’hiver au Luxembourg packs in a complex and solid landscape. The chalky yellows and tinted violets beautifully contrast shadows in the background space, and then shift the viewers’ attention to the golden vertical shafts of (wheat?) and flat plateau in the foreground. It’s an unanticipated stacking of natural and architectural elements, as they interlace in a unified but heterogeneous space. I particularly enjoy the brushstrokes in the pale blue sky, which create brisk, sweeping directional lines in the very top of the piece. The movement is a lively divergence from the solidity of the grounded structures. But I was most surprised to then view the other paintings you have posted on the site. Most of the other paintings in the folio exhibit a lighter sensibility- as if the ground is dissolving into washes of pigment within open expanses of space. While I can see they were posted in the same time frame, I wonder what accounts for the divergent approach to the land.
merci beaucoup! Très gentil
