Oil, graphite and graphite glaze on organza, gold gesso and aluminum

Affluenza refers to our country’s recent unsustainable addiction to economic growth. Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi Scheme inspired the images of American Currency behind a carnival mask. My reaction to the current state of American economics.

Curator’s Comments:

Affluenza is a gorgeous and yet surprising work, having political content embedded in the abstracted and delicately sheer wings of the heraldic eagle.  The familiar iconography is turned on its head, as the many arrows pierce through the composition with Eye of Providence tips mingled through blood red ribbons.  Even the laurel boasts tiny crimson berries. I appreciate the off-kilter positioning of the subject/scene, as it obscures the figure ground relationship, and pulls the piece further from straightforward illustration. While the communication is succinct, it doesn’t read as heavy-handed.  I also contemplate the media you have indicated in the piece’s notation.  The aluminum and gold no doubt reinforce the visual connection to wealth. I was very happy to come across this piece randomly today, and view in in contrast to your other elegant, and diaphanous figurative works.

Beautiful work, and an unexpected response to the love of money problem.
