Curator’s Comments:
Jezebel is an absorbing piece because of the expression of the subject, and formal handling of the media. The depiction of the Biblical figure presents her in a determined repose; concentrated and direct in presentation. The radiating halo complete with small flowers softens her a bit, if not gives the viewer confirmation of her piousness. But I’m also intrigued by the handling of the surface of her garments, which have both a flatter and textural feel. The gold hue appears almost metallic, but rough and simple compared with the chiaroscuro values in her face and hair. Formally, I think the flatness of the dress connects to the graphic design of the halo, creating three visually disparate but conceptually harmonized sections. While there is some ambiguity created in this back and forth interchange, I can see how Jezebel shares some of the eternal mystery evidenced in your other figurative works.
