Portfolios: June 2012 Curator Reviewed Art
Curator’s Comment:
I find it fascinating how the same subject can be composed similarly, but in the hand of another artist can elicit an entirely different mood. (See Joel Cohen’s New York State Fair) Memories jeweled tonalities heightens the floral sensibility in the ride’s ornamental decoration- making the colorful flying seats reminiscent of seed pods, or stray petals breaking away from a larger bloom. Despite the obvious mechanical nature of the subject and the punched out openings in the chairs offering up geometric elements, I still interpret the overall image as softly organic. The saturated red area inside the central column of the structure appears to be the heart of the piece- a thriving, pulsating focal point. I also respond to the hazy edges of the piece, alluding to old Polaroids, and of course the faded peripheral edges of our own memories. The penchant for keeping the subject teetering between past and present is a striking and sophisticated component throughout your body of work.
