Curator’s Comments:
This piece simply entitled Isolation speaks volumes about contemporary culture and distanced relationships with its back to back silhouettes. I was surprised to see it identified as a photograph work, and wonder if the process is cyanotype? The subject of the piece seems to not only be the lack of connection between the two individuals, but a dynamic between dark and light, and interior and exterior space. The lighter scratched lines around the bodies creates a slightly smoky effect, along with a shift in gestural movement. The lines pushing out of the boundaries of the figure on the right also seem to have the effect of pulling her body away from the other. I read the two subjects as male and female because of the contours of their heads, but there is also a universal gaze in their opaque forms, stripping away individual identity, race, age, etc. Isolation shares a strong graphic presence with your work I have enjoyed in the past, and I’m very happy that it came up randomly on the site today.
