Curator’s Comments:
Somehow these shoe paintings escaped my attention earlier. I remember being attracted to your shadowy animal figures some time ago. These representational works depart stylistically from those, but arguably maintain a pictorial narrative through figural associations. 2 Shoes in particular sets up a relationship of proximity. Gender associations can easily be made in the type of men’s loafers and woman’s low heels; the male pair turns over to reveal his hidden tap to his “onlooking” partner. As a purely formal still life, the work has delicate shadows and local color. I’m fond of the warm cast shadows and subtly manipulated, velvety ground. The muted palette of the piece is effective in setting a mood, and the openness of the foreground provides the viewer welcome entry into the shared space. The paintings that focus on each pair separately, simply identified and Mens Shoes and Girls Shoes, respectively, could be viewed as character studies for the final paired piece. I’m also intrigued to find these works among your Water Rox, Panorama series. While each body of work attentively captures nuances in value, the breath of approaches speaks to unusual artistic dexterity. As they were all posted some time ago, please do consider sharing your new work to the site.
