wow, what an interesting piece! so much depth.
Curator’s Comment:
Flower failure has an inspired topographic guise, seeming to mix organic and geometric metaphorical elements. The large floral focal point is strangely bejeweled and detailed, radiating out to the similarly shaped, small orange and black explosions/bursts. The simple triangular shapes seem to serve as iconic warnings, playing with the idea of power/flower failure on a mapped out plane. I like that the structure of the painting holds together through a web of irregular shapes, rather than having a reliance on a traditional grid. Nevertheless, the bright blue lines crossing over and under the warmer pools of color are fresh, and help direct the traversing movement. Its actual scale must strengthen the environmental impact. Interstices is another fascinating piece, though it’s difficult for me to appreciate the encaustic work on the screen. It is bold in its use of circular overlays on the map, but the compass doesn’t have the visual complexity or dissonance of the Flower painting. I may be over reaching with your intent, but here’s something captivating and unsettling about the former piece, which lures the viewer in with decorative embellishment only to realize the lure’s artificiality may be contributing to another’s demise.
