Curator’s Comments:
This up-front and playful construction came up randomly on the site this morning. It’s a fresh and unexpected juxtaposition of disparate forms that come together in a figurative meld. I remember being introduced to your work on the site several years ago, and I enjoyed the expressive painterly portraits. The intuitive and gestural marks within this head possibly take a backseat to the stark chair form here, (no pun intended) but the reduced facial structure and analogous color visually reinforces the connection between the elements. The similarly constructed sculpture, designated MG_9595 offers a related approach to assemblage, but in this feminine version I do concentrate on the gestural and broken lines in the face. The distressed surface of this piece of furniture nicely echoes the abrasion and patina color on the round portrait. There’s a pleasurable haptic and tactile sensibility in both chair pieces. No doubt they have a heightened sensory presence in their physical forms. I do hope you continue to share your current work in this new year. I also concur with the comments James' left several years ago.
I keep going back to this piece. I wonder what could do with a whole room piece.
I like your use of furniture in your work.
