Curator’s Comment:
I find Minute Man Park to be an emphatically responsive painting, with a relatively understated landscape orientation. The passages of rich ochre and umber lines are a strong complement to the watery blue sky above and pinkish areas of ground. The layered and loosely crossing brushstrokes in the bottom section in particular create a reflective depth, while the vertical slashed lines break the strong horizontal directionality and offer the viewer more fortified footing in the picture plane. I find this to be an interesting departure from the earlier work you’ve posted, as this painting doesn’t employ the signature compartmentalization and graphic refinement of smaller patterned motifs. The immediately preceding painting, entitled Wildlife Refuge, seems to be a hybridization of these disparate approaches. The changing vertical and diagonal alignment of the grass like section also sets itself apart as an element of landscape, countered by the slice of blue at the top of the piece. I particularly like how the smoother divided sections on the left generally break into the right textured half. These new works appear to fluctuate been non-objective expanses of color and light, and experiential explorations of unadulterated natural space.
