Curator’s Comments:

CloudStorms came up randomly on the site for me this morning, and I was drawn in by the fresh, gestural marks and high chroma palette.  The choppy brushstrokes in the top of the composition reveal unexpected brown and yellow hues, that are reflected in smoother, darker sections in the ground.  The intense blue also crosses the horizon, but rather than connecting the sky to the earth, the dark silhouettes of distant hills provides a strong break in atmospheric space.  This formal relationship appears to be set up in other landscapes, such as Waves of Lake Michigan, and the first piece designated Mircsov_10. I find it interesting that the vertically oriented CloudStorms arrives at a similar soothing calm as in #10, but Waves of Lake Michigan instead evokes a turbulent and almost angry wave pattern.  The varied red and green colors in these wave breaks warn of a deeper danger; while providing a visual barrier to the darker waters beyond. The psychology of these pieces lure the viewer in with painterly expression, but suggest storms brewing above and below.
