Curator’s Comment:

I find Dulce Suenos quirky and sweet at the onset, but there is a darker, more disquieting undercurrent to the idiosyncratic image.   It causes me to reflect on pictorial traditions of breasts as offerings throughout European art as well as the Latin ex-voto tradition.  But this more surreal manipulation is somewhat darker as the oozing pink fluid references a melting body or blood forming a slowly pooling channel around the centralized structure.  The ripe cherries are exaggerated and suggestive- their glistening skins becoming artifice through elaborate highlights and shadow.  The chocolate covered sweets in the bodily cavity itself are curious as well. Alternating phallic forms with the mundane, the ‘sweets’ become pallid in comparison to the fleshy container and candy colored overflow. The white scalloped plate in the background provides a formal visual rest, but also makes the subject more object- oriented than image-oriented.   Arguably the most feminine object in the picture, it provides a gentle softness to the beautiful, but almost grotesque display.   I see this piece as a skillful, but sardonic nod to several art historic genres and traditions.  My affection for it continues to grow with longer viewing.
