Portfolios: October 2014 Curator Reviewed Art
Comment
My name is Mike Giese I enjoy the process of making art both sculpture and painting and have been for a long while. The more I look at my work the more I can see that needs to be accomplished meaning making my art more appealing with adding color, changing the composition or starting over all together so it's usually a long process to the finished product. But I enjoy the process of making art being either difficult or easy in the decision process.
Curator’s Comments:
Slugger J is wonderfully idiosyncratic, as the viewer intuits his awkwardly discomfited proportions and retracted posture. The extreme verticality of the picture plane also compresses the pictorial space in a way to enhance the quirky positioning. I see the bat as club like, echoing the heaviness of the batter’s forearms and stout torso. His fixed stare is intense, but the roundness of his eye adds a small bit of humor to the piece. I particularly enjoy the saturated color throughout the painting, from the deep red-violets in his helmet and shadows and the blue-green environment. It’s also interesting to view this piece alongside other more abstract figure paintings, and the obsessively surfaces sculptural works. The installation shots that reveal the substantial amount of small pieces attached to wires appear especially compulsive and driven. The fact that they depict ordinary objects in extraordinary groupings is strangely and incredibly compelling.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
