Curator’s Comment:
I’m attracted to your wide range of your work, and soft pastel treatment of angular forms. The abstraction of this particular arrangement (titled Pastels?) is engaging in part because of its direct, straightforward composition. The relieved vertical symmetry creates harmony and balance, but I’m intrigued by the slight shifts in hue and shape. The circles aren’t perfectly contoured, and so the mark of a hand drawn shape adds to the almost soulful temper of the piece. The circular shapes also appear to push out from their triangular boundaries or confinements, creating subtle movement and dissonance. But the muted palette ultimately creates a mood of quiet elegance rather than dynamic tension. It’s like a Russian Constructivist painting subdued by Paul Klee. I’m also reminded of Klee in your pictographic work titled Ceremony. Again, the muted warm coloration melds with the tactile quality of the works surface. I like seeing something different happening along the edges, as if the entire piece has been worked over with layers of competing imagery. This reveal adds to the depth and mystery of the subject.
