An arresting image, My Dear Africa is starling in its graphic candor.  My immediate reaction to the bleak transformation of the skull to the continent quickly gives way to more subtle complexities of understanding.  The warm umber coloration stirs visceral reminders of earth and erosion; the patina of time and decay.  The inky blackness of the background further sets off the dark tonality, offering little light.  Through death can be macabre and violent, this image could also speak to its inevitability.  Time itself enters into the picture, for mortality is universal.  But the expressed endearment in title, as already insightfully stated, carries over into the viewers’ comprehension of the piece.  We share in the implicit desire to protect- to rail and guard against despair and death.  While this image confirms our knowledge of current famine, political turmoil, chaos and warfare, we are also confronted with the farther reaching human condition.

it's strange how endearing this image is.  your african series + Iberia all have that same deeply warm quality
