Portfolios: After Brillo
Comment
Curator’s Comments:
Is it possible to look at artwork featuring a Brillo box without thinking of Warhol? Your Pop- contemporary kitsch inspired works masterfully play with known as well as unfamiliar juxtapositions. I had admired your Kusama titled homage some time ago, and am now coming around to My Forgotten Birthday for a longer look. The dot motif of course still plays against Kusama’s signature psychedelic patterns, but smartly puts them up against other Pop emblems for a completely new take on art and commodification. While the portrait pieces in your portfolio seems to be about the appetite for beauty and sex, these still life pieces encode gender and (playful jokes about) seduction in ordinary objects. Ultimately the success of this piece also stems from the easy visual flow between the confetti-like fall of dots and the glossy advertising. I wonder if the choice of a less than pristine Brillo box is a commentary in itself.
