Curator’s Comment:
Thank you for sharing your work and inviting feedback. The piece I find most appealing in the grouping posted is titled Mystique. It shares some of the effortless grace found in the black calligraphic ink characters, but offers a more complex narrative because of the relationship between the figure, the red ball sun, and the strong horizon. I enjoy the formal repetition of the circle shape, in linear form above the figures head; as if the world or sky is being held up. The dry brushy texture in the red horizontal band suggests both earth and water, creating an iconic axis mundi. The empty white space also adds a buoyancy to the general mood of the image, but there is also a small amount of visual tension where the dominant lines and arc meet up. While I’m unfamiliar with the aesthetic tradition of East Asian sumi painting, I can appreciate the austere economy of those designs. Curiously, your more colorful non-objective pieces are very densely organized and layered, such as Silver Ulna and Voila, and don’t appreciably reference the calligraphic pictures. It seems as though there’s ample room to explore these energetically, but paradoxically opposed relationships.
