Curator’s Comments:
Naming Sirius,Capella, Vega is an exciting piece; more abstract and possibly less illustrative than your more stylized pictorial paintings. I didn’t originally recognize it as part of your portfolio, as you have a strongly identifiable signature style that I associate with small dancing human figures. It does however evoke the same smart formal contrast between emptier, less developed space versus a more intricate vignette of imagery on a bold color field. I find the saturated red hue is an aesthetically surprising palette choice. It rises up against the delicacy of the floral imagery and smaller inset of astral constellations. The iconography itself evokes the sensation of natural cyclical arrangements and mysteries of the stars. (In charts of the sort we’re accustomed to viewing a nautical blue-black.) So the red and gold alternately assert an impassioned sense of the precious rather than the natural order of things. The radiating design coming from the center of the work also reinforces a connection between solar or stellar movement and fragile living organisms.
