Curator’s Comments:
Ocean Ribbons is an elegant image, with dexterous pink and green fluctuations within a broad color palette. The tangle of green kelp “ribbons” beautifully contains deep violets and lighter yellow-green tints. I’m also attracted to the cool blue cast shadows under the sponge or sea anemone in the bottom of the piece. The overall color scheme is local, and yet draws attention to the more subtle undertones in the marine life that washes ashore. I’m uncertain if this piece is a watercolor painting, or colored pencil drawings- the surfaces appears to shift between wash and texture on a rough toothed paper. However, for all of these subtle complexities of realism within the interior of the forms, the composition relies on dramatic and sweeping implied diagonal lines. Looking through your other pieces on the site, I remember admiring your more complex environments with narrative content. Ocean Ribbons may be a parred down piece with fewer storied elements, but the attention to detail and drama is undoubtedly retained.
