Curator’s Comments:

I enjoy the austerity of these paintings.  The smooth pictographic shapes provide an organic sensibility that is furthered by the chalky white grounds. This piece and its apt title reference to Nest communicates a tenuous connection to an unknown interior with the thin red thread on the right side.  For me the nest itself surprisingly reads as a hole or void rather than a vessel or container.  Small and leaf life, the nest could alternately be interpreted as an orifice or fissure in a solid body.  These small delicate shapes and lines nicely offset the large mass of the bird’s pink body, without unnecessarily entangling the simple objects. I also respond to the painting entitled White Kimono.  The dark blue strips along the sides function as a framing mechanism; though I have a vague sense the work is actually cropped. It’s interesting that while it formally functions as a diptych, the emphasis on the division of the picture plane stays along the blue sides rather than the white seam in the obvious center. It also shares the same lush, milky white surface punctuated by ambiguous minor inclusions. This could reference a macrocosmic system in that an all encompassing space, considered a singular entity, revealing numerous structures within.
