Curator’s Comments:

Thyme is a curious painting, because despite the attention to surface texture and articulation of small segments within the picture plane, it maintains a relatively flat space.  There’s a mystery in trying to decipher the subject; I quite like the ambiguity of the picture.  Whereas most of your other works appear to move towards pictorial representation of natural subjects like figures and landscapes, this work offers a very detailed but uncertain subject.  The patterned repetition of the pale grey block blocks adds visual interest and diversity as well as unifying conformity in its slight shape and size variation.  The centralized focal point calls attention it’s its obvious dissimilarity; reading as a solid form as well as a hole in the grey wall.  The painting entitled New York Abstract is strikingly dissimilar in its realism and contrasting and dark overall value pattern.  But I enjoy it for its physiological mood and play with architectural space.  The small grey figure appears overwhelmed in the environment- almost toppling over himself on the flat but tilted plane in the foreground.  The lite skyscrapers seem rise out of a dividing line, almost like an exaggerated stage set.  There’s a lot to look at in these two paintings; and the manipulations in abstraction of form keep me coming back to see new formal relationships.
