Curator’s Comments:
This large-scale photo-realistic painting Night happily caught my attention today. The somber tones underscore the glowing illumination within the restaurant, and assist in the tranquil mood of the piece. Small glimpses of human presence are noted with longer viewing, but the image still conveys a sense of isolation. Reminiscent of Richard Estes empty urban scenes, emphasis is placed on the straight line of viewing to refrigerated compartments, and the contrasting shadows outside. As in many of your other works, the scene skillfully shifts interior-exterior spaces with reflected light and densely detailed segments with open expanses of color. The ‘open’ sign could be construed as welcoming, but I read it as a slight visual incongruity against the empty chair at the table, within the shadowy night. I hope you’re continuing to actively paint, and would love to see more recent work.
