I can never resist these mirrors when I build the birdhouses...also a floating pink egg for warmth.

Curator’s Comments:
Realizing this is a detail shot of the interior of one of your mixed media sculptures, I think it’s a great stand alone piece. It speaks volumes of the intimate relationship between interior hidden forms and exterior facades. Assuming we’re seeing a self portrait, I’m engaged by its connection to Classical images that embed or imprint the artists’ process within the finished work. Compositionally, I also love how the circular lens/mirror fits into the larger roughly circular opening, and then moves down to the elliptical pink egg. Without understanding the origins of the image, there is a decided confusion between real and illusionistic space; flat and dimensional planes. This ambiguity holds the viewer in the center position of the picture plane, while the composition moves around this central convergence. The pale orange frame of the photograph beautifully softens the sharper focus of the figure “inside”.
The original source, The Hummingbirdman of Alcatraz is more didactic in its storytelling. The small caged structure of the birdhouse is a curiously quaint surrogate for human incarceration; reducing the captive to a fragile, questionably domesticated creature. I’m unsure about your feelings towards the actual subject. I interpret sympathy, but also an underlying sense of self-induced exile in the multi-layered and self-reflecting interior.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
