My aim, in this painting was to focus on the act of hand washing - hence the closeness. As to your point of it looking like a home sink...you are right. This is my sink. I have, however, seen many restaurant rest rooms that have more upscale, less institutional fixtures. In truth, the title is just something that popped into my head after I had finished. I thought it was both apropos and humorous.
Curator’s Comments:
All Employees Must….came up in a random display of paintings, and I’m struck b y the candor of the cropped in close scene. While the title suggests an institutional setting, I interpret the brass fixture and curvilinear design of the sink to belong in a domestic setting. The heightening realism of the rushing water and interior of the sink and drain are particularly convincing, and exquisitely painted. But I also feel as though the narrative is curtailed, or at least abbreviated, by the tight focus. Whereas your other figurative works are complex and curious in their ambiguity of time and place, I find this image somewhat funny in its straight on direct and explicit depiction of a private act.
