This Drawing of Boots has a strong emotive presence, combining unrestrained gestural mark-making with dense color relationships.  The red ground is especially provocative behind the dark violet and ochre boots, as the edges of the subject disappear and then become reestablished as solid form.  Small details such as the riveted lace holes punctuates the subject with tiny visual anchors, injecting bits of clear representation and order as the more erratic lines swirl around the boots.  I also like the diagonal positioning of the boots themselves, adding more dynamic movement to what would otherwise be weighty still life.  It’s a particularly commanding work that can elevate an ordinary and mundane subject to position of vibrancy and mystery.
