Curator’s Comment:

Power is an absorbing piece as it carries elements of patterned mosaic and embellishments, while the lower chroma green strikes a dissonant chord, offering complexity of mood and space.  I especially like the graduated values of the relatively muted green ground.  Lighter tints float on top, while the most intense hues surround the points of contact between the more dynamic textural shapes. I make out very abstracted figurative forms, which seem to stretch and lean towards each other rather than engage in conflicted power play, as the title implies.  The tail-like shape in the upper right section of the painting moves me as especially relaxed, and passive in the dreamlike environment.  However, the square format of the picture plane does provoke a certain visual tension, as the imagery is pulled both horizontally and vertically.  I also like the small, extraneous bits of broken color than appear to be minute shards breaking off the larger forms while they’re otherwise aroused.  The overall effect is mysterious, but denotes a building of momentum and uncertain turbulence or emotional upheaval.  The lighter palettes of your other abstract pieces are quite pleasing visually, (such as Desirous Joy or Beauty of Nature) but the purity of the blue ground removes the suggestion of conflict or discordant interface. In the later works, I see pure joy.
