Thank you for your kind critique! I wasn't expecting to be critiqued straight away and I very much appreciate it.
Curator’s Comments:
The textural density of this drawing nicely underscores the mix between boisterous visual elements and more controlled and contrived imagery. I find Promise Me to be especially strong in its unification of various hot and cool hues against the black background. The saturated blue letters in particular pop in contrast, and move the eye through the picture plane. There’s also a graphic appeal to the numerals and letters that play off of the natural elements. The balance of compositional weight is particularly effective as well, as the larger and more complex objects are pushed off to the corners, which float around a flat circle in the center. It emphasizes a swimming, ethereal space. The white painterly drip marks that appear on the top layer of the piece further connect the disparate shapes and colors through refined gestural chaos. The skull and butterflies could symbolically represent academic virtues or just as easily reference the dissolution of the natural world. Maybe it says something about the homogeny of human and animal. But in looking at this series, I have to conclude more is more.
