Curator’s Comments:
I’m quite taken by this untitled oil on board, in its dramatic changes of direction within a unifying composition of geographic strata. Reading the work as an abstract landscape, I’m particularly enamored with the lush color and texture in the middle ground. The fairly opaque planes of space over what appears to be a warmer brown ground look to be created from layers of hard edged stencils. Thinner washes of color balance the top of the piece; I like the decrease in spatial density as you move up the picture plane, into a lighter and airy blue sky. The band of intense red-orange in the center is also a wonderful visual foil to the otherwise low chroma color scheme. It can be viewed as sunset in the scheme of natural representation.
