Curator’s Comments:
This piece made me smile. The corded phone depicted in the drawing entitled Old Technology singles out the subject in an austere settling for consideration, while using decidedly expressive marks. The open space around the phone vibrates with energy through the overlapping and gestural hatched lines, and the bits of high chroma yellow highlight infused into the otherwise cool rendering. The strong diagonal bar running through the composition doesn’t appear to contribute much to a narrative or spatial environment, but I’m struck by how organic the phone looks by comparison. The rounded edges and “tail” of the curly/fuzzy cords conjure a living entity. Looking at the original date that this work was posted, I wonder if it will be viewed differently in another ten years.
