Curator’s Comment:

Lines in the Sand appears to effortlessly bridge your photographic landscapes and expressive non-objective paintings.  The textural variation in the piece forms stuttering paths of texture reminiscent of naturally occurring seashore as well as sensitively etched intaglio lines and aquatinted tonal patterns.  The absence of color provides a quite respite of meditative space; the viewer is left to contemplate the ebb and flow of lines and grainy/earthy tonality.  I enjoy it for its quiet restraint, as equally as Into the Briar Patch delights for explosive painterly abstraction and dramatic hue saturation.  Sharing some dripped patterning that is questionably accidental or more contrived; this painting has a raw, gutsy intensity that is highly engaging.  The diptych formal provides a brief structural relief from the movement and aggressive mark making, but the large physical scale is sure to suspend any easing distance for the viewer.  We become enveloped and eventually taken over by the movement and densely packed atmosphere. Briar Patch is an apt title reference- a thorny thicket with literary and poetic promise.
