Curator’s Comments:
Open to You (2) remains a popular piece on the site, even though it was posted many years ago. I find the title of this engaging sculpture somewhat ironic, as the box tilts downward, rather than towards the viewer. The perforated surface makes the entire form porous, and is somewhat of a contradiction as a container. I’m grateful for the notation of the media, as otherwise I wouldn’t be sure what I was viewing. The work could just as easily be enjoyed as a graphic two-dimensional print. Looking back through your body of work on the site, I recall enjoying your container-based clay constructions. There is a visceral pleasure in those objects because of color and texture rippling through crumpled edges, whereas Open to You greets us with a cooler autonomy. The starkness of the construction contributes to its formal and conceptual success.
