Curator’s Comments:
The undulating lines of this Orange Alabaster sculpture evoke a beautiful aquatic entity. The biomorphic abstraction suggests shell-like openings in the concave areas, while the luminous color in the convex portions recall skin, and a decidedly human corporal form. The matte finish of the dark base grounds the object in space. But I also see the piece as reaching upward in a stacked trajectory of curvilinear projections and undulations. It was interesting to view this sculpture in the context of your two-dimensional works, which utilize similarly weighted calligraphic lines and organic figurations. I remember admiring your striking prints on wood veneer several years ago, and marveled at your deft selection of materials to coax imagery from natural grain patterns. I see a similar process in this sculpture.
