Curator’s Comments:
Sometimes I come across a work of art that inexplicably attracts me, as though I’m witnessing something familiar and poignant but I can’t identify its source or origin. Reflection Island is one of those pieces for me, as the pale orange castle shape appears isolated, floating in a cool semi-opaque surround. It is poetically simple in composition. But the layering of color is also sophisticated in its suggestion of a light source, and luminous reflection of water without a detectable horizon. The lack of any clear boundaries, whether delineating the edge of the water or distance from land, makes the viewer feel slightly adrift despite the rather tight cropping of the subject. The tactile physicality of the piece can also be appreciated from the image, as fine cross hatched lines are visible on the paintings built-up surface. I’m additionally intrigued by the blue-grey patch on the orange structure below the first and second projections. It feels like a doorway, or possible entrance into the edifice. On a psychological level, this promises the viewer guarded entry into the space.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
