Curator’s Comment:
This vertical triptych has strong visual movement between areas of open and more densely occupied space. The limited, almost monochromatic color palette offers a bold value contrast, and what looks like a transparency color/pigment bleed. I particularly enjoy the center panel, as the placement of the three dominant black shapes slice inward into the composition and dissolve into smaller dark bits. The organic amalgamations suggest a topographic surface from an aerial view; or contrariwise stained cells for microscopic viewing. The seventh (identically titled) image is also an interesting piece to complete in the grouping. While it appears to be on a similar scale, the marks look much thicker and more spontaneous. There was possibly more ‘captured accident’ in the bottom section of the composition, as the transition of value and pooled texture occupies a large area in the piece. This play between formal design and gestural mark making is extremely pleasing.
