Curator’s Comments:
This subway image has interesting light and shadow within a familiar designated space. For me this produces an inherent lonely quality. The extreme darkness above the figures on the platform exudes an almost ominous weight, denying easy exit from the cavernous space. The yellow-green hue of the light further imposes a disturbingly artificial quality to the air, while warmer light pushes off to the far left of the picture plane. Framed within a traditional rectilinear format, the light and play of shadows gives the sensation of elongation of the normal landscape proportions. I like how the picture exemplifies the human condition of waiting- whether for everyday transport, or something infinitely larger.
