Curator’s Comment:

An interesting psychological grouping of figures, I’m attracted to the subtle washes of pink and blue tints and white washes over what seems to be graphite or charcoal drawing.  The materiality of the forms vacillates between ghost like apparition and solid flesh and bone.  The gestures of the figures on the left side reach towards the right en masse, becoming a single yearning entity.  I’m curious about the thicker red-orange line that separates them from the recoiled, isolated figure on the other side.  The barrier suggests a rift that is emotionally symbolic rather than physical. The support seems to be (slightly creased) paper, further enhancing the qualities of taut vulnerability.  The following image (P1020527) with three standing female figures isn’t as wrought with corporeal/mental action, and instead holds a more stoic, cerebral mood.  But the scumbled blue in the bottom section creates an interesting balance against the more linear drawing, and moves up to envelop the figures in part. While the central form is unyielding, the one on its right virtually dissolves into the ground. Perhaps this is a classic, academic figure study without intention of narrative content.  Either way, its strength in line and exuberant, earthy color captures and holds my attention.
