Curator’s Comments:
Coming across this untitled (or numerically designated) piece in your ‘Bankster’ portfolio, I remembered admiring the animated characters in your work taking on contemporary financial speculators and corporate greed several years ago. Today this work seems as, if not even more relevant. What strikes me about this piece, and revisiting the folio, is the complex interworking of symbolic elements and text. The concept appears to visually lay out a multifarious bait and switch- the streamlined economy of the figures underscoring their vulnerability within the workings. I like that the two large figures dominate the space, and anchor the active movement in the composition, But I also find it curious that despite the soft curves of the female on the left, she appears to conceal money, just as she grasps a smaller, less powerful figure. If she is the antagonist to the narrative, the other female doesn’t necessarily balance as a witting protagonist. Stepping on the “little people”, her averted gaze is ambiguous. Does she aspire to more, or is her expression an awakening? I recognize these works were posted in 2014. I would love to see if the series continued, and if there is a progression in the story.
