Curator’s Comments:
This numerically designated Painting- 29 evokes Albers’ longstanding Homage to the Square, with more visual complexity and punch. I enjoy how the central pale, neutral square floats against a slightly contrasting pinkish ground. This creates an ephemeral quality through its slight shift of light. The higher chroma purple and orange push the viewer back out into the front of the picture plane with their hard edged geometry. I appreciate the formal decision that these brighter hues exist in a longer rectangle rather than form another equal square. The change in proportion accentuates the value contrast and chromatic variation. I remember admiring some of your other geometric constructions last year. The more muted palette and black edges arguably held a bolder physicality. But I now find myself enamored with these more subtle plays with saturated color.
